All rental agencies in Los Cabos require that a DEPOSIT be placed on
a major credit card. They will not usually accept the increasingly common debit
cards, as these types of cards can not be processed through any of the
banks in Los Cabos. If you do not have a credit card, it is possible that
Budget Rent-A-Car at the airport might rent to you if you pay in advance,
and leave your return flight ticket with them for collateral (been there - done that).
Almost all of the car rentals in Cabo San Lucas include UNLIMITED MILEAGE.
A careful walk around of the vehicle you intend to rent is important, if
you don't want to be donged for a ding caused by the person who rented
the car before you. If you are planning any off road adventures (or even if you are not), checking
the spare tire and jack is also a good idea.
ABOUT CAR RENTAL PRICES...If you have reserved your car before
heading to Los Cabos, you are probably locked into a price for your car, so don't worry about
the price issue. If you are going to rent a car from the counter with no reservations, this is
for you! There are usually more cars to rent at the airport than there are customers who want to rent them,
so prices can get pretty soft. Do not agree to rent the car you want
after they give you your first price quote. This is a game they play, and it's a game you can win if
you know that you're playing! When they quote you the price, repeat the price out loud, like it's a question.
"Fifty dollars a day?" Then look at the car rental booth next door for any interesting looks or remarks.
The odds are good that one of the other rental agencies will whip out a calculator and quote you
a price below the one you were quoted from the original vendor (who will then lower his price
to beat his competiton). This madness can be carried on back and forth in a friendly manner to an insane degree,
depending upon how busy things are. Even if you don't care about the rental price, this can be great entertainment!
And don't worry...it's no skin off of the counter-person's back, they are getting paid to rent cars, no matter what the
price is!
LET'S TALK ABOUT COWS. More people are killed in Baja each year by running
into cattle on the highway than any other event. The road between Cabo
San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo has improved with respect to lounging livestock,
but driving the away from the corridor can still be dangerous. The roads north from Cabo
San Lucas, up Highway 19 to Todos Santos, and up Highway 1 to La Paz, are
two of the worst roads on the entire peninsula. The problem increases significantly
at night, when many Baja travelers are driving faster than they can safely
see ahead. Once Bessy's big brown eyes are staring at you from the hood
of your car, it's too late. The best time to prepare for a safe journey
is as soon as you get behind the wheel of the car. Drive defensively. Safety
is no accident.
With a car in Cabo your fun options open up considerably. TODOS SANTOS for breakfast? It's only about an hour away. Curious about the historic fishing resorts on the East Cape? It's only an hour to the quaint seaside town of BUENA VISTA!
Looking for a road trip adventure? All those rumors you heard about the desolate beaches of the EAST CAPE are true! Go check it out!
Getting automobile liability insurance for car rentals in Cabo is a must. Several companies offer competitive rates, and obtaining a policy on-line before you leave home is easy.
If you are considering renting a car to drive to Cabo (either one way or round trip) there is a U.S. car rental company that specializes in renting cars to go to Baja. Google or Bing CALIFORNIA BAJA RENT-A-CAR...they have a variety of programs to make your Peninsula driving adventure a reality.
And if you want more information on driving an R.V. to Cabo there are two R.V. rental companies taht allow their rigs to be taken into Baja. CRUISE AMERICA R.V. and EL MONTE R.V.
